Vodka Tasting
Friday, October 15th, 2004 - It was time to have a murraythebastard.com sponsored event and we knew just what to do; a vodka tasting.
We had read about this being done by some gentlemen in New York and we figured that we should give it a shot. The intrepid Mr. Tamm procured 8 bottles from the L.C.B.O. and then two more were added to the list to make it 10.
The evening's host was Mr. Altosaar who had prepared the scoresheets and set the table. Guests began arriving at 7 p.m. and soon thereafter the vodka was brought out.
So that it could be a blind taste test, the vodka was poured into mason jars labeled with letters. Each jar was chilled at fridge temperature rather than at freezer temperature so that it would be easier to taste flavours.
Since mason jars are not exactly built for pouring liquid, we used a funnel to fill the shot glasses.
The scoresheet was divided into three sections: Pre-tasting, Tasting and Post-revelation.
Pre-tasting
- Appearance
- Viscosity
- Colour
- Clarity
Though good in theory, the pre-tasting ratings were of little use since vodka is a clear, colourless liquid. Viscosity was the only parameter that seemed measurable. This was done by seeing what kind of "legs" it had; swirling the vodka in the glass and then watching how slowly the residual stream of liquid flowed down the inside of the glass.
Tasting
- Smell
- Taste
- Aftertaste
- Throat burn
- Stomach burn
The procedure for each tasting was generally the same. We would sniff the vodka and then a bit of it was sipped to judge the flavour. To judge the throat and stomach burn, the remaining vodka was taken in a shot.
Every three or four rounds we would take a break to clear our palates and our heads. To sustain ourselves, we had selections of smoked, marinated and salted fish as well as caviar. Rye bread, sour cream and rosolje were also served.
We discovered what we had been drinking during the Post-revelation stage. This final stage is where we rated the brands themselves.
Post-revelation
- Name
- Logo
- Shape of bottle
- Marketing
Seeing what we had just tasted was probably the most fun. It was the drunken equivalent of putting faces to names and rating the way the bottles looked was much easier than distinguishing between the look of their contents.
Results
Since the Pre-tasting scores were of little use, they only counted towards 10% of the final score. The Tasting totals were worth the most contributing 66% to the final total. The Post-revelation totals made up the rest. (~24%)
