Turf Soccer

Complicated team selection process. Thursday, January 13th, 2005 - After the raging success of the murraythebastard.com sponsored Vodka Tasting, it was important to keep the social momentum going.

Murray hatched the ingenious plan of hosting turf soccer and he put together an impressive roster comprised of some of the greatest names in Toronto recreational soccer - names like Jamie, Grant, Katie, David, Melanie, Ron... In fact, the game was so hyped around town and beyond that Kristi came all the way from Estonia to take part. Change room.

We all gathered on January 13th to show the turf what's what. But where the hell was Murray? Look at the selection of images on this page. Do you see Murray Foster anywhere? It turns out that the very inspiration for this site lived up to the legend and did not come to the soccer game that he himself organised. [insert your own "what a bastard" quote here]

Thanks to Murray's sad but unsurprising truancy, your intrepid reporter was recruited to pick up the slack and collect money to pay for the field rental. Everyone cheerfully paid his or her $10 and we were ready to select teams. But how do we pick teams amongst strangers?

Using a time-honoured selection process suggested by Stephen, a single-file line from tallest to shortest was formed and we counted off into ones and twos. Ones wore dark shirts and the Twos wore white. It felt like grade 3 but it worked and we were ready to play. Instead of full-sized nets, we used driving range separators which measured about 6 feet wide by 3 feet high.

Team white preparing for battle. Since I'm not actually insane, I will spare you, dear reader, a play-by-play breakdown and analysis of the match. Suffice it to say that the Ones beat the Twos 2-1. (role reversal) So in grand total we had 18 players, 3 goals, 2 injuries and immeasurable good times. Post-game snap.

After the game we retired to the Einstein pub for refreshment and post-game camaraderie. As ordered, any money leftover after the rental fee was used to purchase communal beer.

Letting Murray know what we think of him.
Murray, the last pic's for you!
